UN Cares reaches new UN facility in Valencia, Spain 10 May, 2012
UNSB-V is a new UN Information and telecommunications facility in Valencia, Spain. It works in conjunction with UNLB in Brindisi . The two bases ensure the safety of data in the event of a catastrophic incident and they provide information and communications technology support to more than 100.000 field personnel deployed around the world.
On 25 and 26 April 2012, the first two UN Cares training sessions were delivered to 25 employees by Carola de Wit, the UN Cares focal point in Brindisi. More sessions will come in the near future for staff in Valencia. Staff members in Valencia appreciated that all material was available in Spanish too; they liked the interactive structure and the discussion on stigma and discrimination. The evaluation of the learning sessions was very positive. A participant mentioned: "I'm glad this training is mandatory, I will take the booklet home and share this experience with my family".

INDONESIA. UN Secretary General addressed the UN staff 10 May, 2012In a recent visit, the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon addressed the UN staff in based in Indonesia. The UN Cares chairperson, Risya Ariyani Kori from ILO, asked the UNSG the following question:
"A UN Plus assessment on health insurance revealed that there is a huge discrepancy between UN agencies in their policies on health coverage for chronic diseases (including HIV). In line with ILO Recommendation on HIV and AIDS and the World of Work, we would like to recommend that UN agencies apply one medical insurance scheme with the same benefits to all UN Staff. What is your opinion on this suggestion, and how do you recommend it could be taken forward?"
The SG reported that one of his first moving experiences in the UN was the meeting with the People Living with HIV, UN Positive Staff and members of the UN Cares Team. This motivated him to make the UN the best place of work where staff living with HIV would be able to work without fear of discrimination and stigma.
Recognising the problems of inconsistency with the health care insurances given the locations of the staff, agency affiliation and the type of contract staff have; he added "we promote One UN, the system needs to change".
He promised to remind UNAIDS to look into this matter very carefully, with a sense of urgency, so that all our staff living HIV positively can live without any fear of being discriminated against, without any stigma.

The Middle East and Northern Africa renew their commitment to UN Cares 7 December, 2011
During a lively three-day sub-regional workshop (30 Oct – 1 Nov) about the implementation of UN Cares in remote and difficult settings, over twenty participants gathered to discuss strategies for executing UN Cares in this key part of the world. We had very dynamic and, at times, heated discussions about how to balance the needs of supporting our staff with the constraints particular to this sub-regional and, indeed, much of MENA, which is currently enduring so much insecurity, transition and transformation.
The workshop provided the participants a platform for sharing experiences and lessons learned from the six countries in the region with somewhat similar working environments and cultural contexts. This candid exchange of experience was essential to test the newly developed implementation guidelines to address complex HIV-response needs of United Nations personnel working and living in remote UN locations and in emergency humanitarian contexts.
